After seven intense editions, the Livigno Skymarathon is stepping out of the summer program of the Little Tibet to make way for new important events, both sporting and non-sporting, that will shape its near future. It is a painful yet necessary decision, considering the vast number of events organized by the town throughout the year. However, it is also a conscious choice that in no way changes the deep bond of love between Livigno and mountain running.
Born from an idea by Marco De Gasperi, a multi-time World Champion in the discipline, the Skymarathon served as the opening race of the summer season for a decade. It successfully achieved the dual goal of attracting some of the world’s top runners, thanks to its high technical standards, and of bringing together the Livigno community, which was deeply involved in ensuring the event’s success through the efforts of the Committee and volunteers. A true example of how high-level sports can become a virtuous tool for collective well-being.
Now, the town’s growth path is taking a different direction, though this may only be a temporary farewell. What remains, however, are the years of flawless organization, shared special moments, and the magnificent unspoiled nature surrounding Livigno, which served as the Skymarathon’s backdrop throughout its existence. This natural wealth, consisting of forests and trails, continues to be carefully preserved and enhanced by the town, providing the perfect stage for mountain running, whether competitive or recreational, and promoting a healthy and active lifestyle in harmony with the environment. This cultural legacy and way of experiencing the mountains owe much to the Skymarathon and the decade spent together.
